Art Director - William Macalister

William (Toby) Macalister is a fine arts specialist, an object and jewelry broker, and an accomplished auctioneer who Is based in New Zealand.

William grew with art and antiques, being a third generation member of a renowned family of architects, jewelers and artists. After completing a three year apprenticeship with Watsons, the south Island's largest auction house, William worked as an independent contractor to one of America's largest galleries as an auctioneer. After a year in South Africa, William returned to Christchurch to purchase Watson's in 2006. He took the business to new levels breaking many long-standing artists records at auction, including Grahame Sydney. Leo Bensemann, Trevor Moffit. and E Meryvn Taylor.

Following Christchurch's 2011 devastating earthquakes,  William opened WT Macalister Fine Art Dealers and Auctioneers, specializing in well curated auctions and exhibitions and offering refined experise in the secondary market, artist's estates and investment art and single vendor collections. He has also handled such high profile disperals as The Leo Bensemann family collection, Sir Ronald Scolt, AA Deans Trust, Russell Clark, Judkins and Sydney Collections.

William brings to the table a wealth of experience in all facets of the art industry. It is this knowledge of the industry. coupled with his commitment to excellent customer service that will ensure Artbay clients benefit from all the group has to offer.

Does Art Bay validate the authenticity of artworks?

No, Art Bay does not offer authentication services. Our appraisal process is conducted exclusively online, which precludes us from verifying the authenticity of artworks, as this necessitates a hands-on analysis.

I'm encountering difficulties uploading images for my appraisal submission. What should I do?

If you cannot upload images during the submission, you can proceed with the entire appraisal process without images. Subsequently, kindly send the images as attachments in a separate email to [email protected].

I'm encountering technical complications during the submission process. Can I submit the information via email?

Can I ask for an appraisal for something I don't own?

To get an appraisal, the item you submit should be owned by the person requesting its assessment.

I've sent in an item for review. How long until I hear back from Art Bay?

You should receive a reply within 24 hours with any questions or requests for further information. Once we receive all the required information we will thoroughly review your submission and you will receive your complete appraisal. Typically the whole process takes less than 72 hours.
